What is Supplemental Security Income?
Posted in: Supplemental Security Income on July 26th, 2011

ssi benefitsSupplemental Security Income is considered to be a needs-based program that is run by the Social Security Administration.  It is designed to help those who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled. Supplemental Security Income is particularly for those who have extremely limited incomes and very few financial resources.  You or somebody that you know can be eligible for Supplemental Security Income even if you have never held a job due to your injury, illness, or other disability.

Supplemental Security Income is paid for through general taxes, not Social Security payroll taxes, which is where the traditional Social Security payments for the retired come from.

SSI Eligibility

In order to be eligible for Supplemental Security Income, your outside monthly income can not be more than 2,000 dollars a month, or 3,000 if you are married.  If your income exceeds this, you cannot get SSI benefits.  In the event that you are married, a portion of your spouse’s income may be counted when deciding if you are eligible for the program or not, depending on how much money they make and what they do.  If you are applying for Supplemental Security Income, you either need to be a United States citizen or be a noncitizen that has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence.  Nobody else is eligible for Supplemental Security Income through the Social Security Administration.
