When Are Work Requirements Waived?
Posted in: Social Security Disability on August 16th, 2011

social security and workWhen applying for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, be sure that you are aware of the particulars of the application process.  The average claim time for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income at this point is nearly two years, so being aware of all the requirements to be accepted to these programs is necessary in order to save you a lot of time and energy.  You also don’t just need to be aware of these requirements, but understand them in their entirety and be able to apply them to your particular situation.

Social Security Disability Insurance And Work

Generally speaking, in order to be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance in particular, you need to have acquired at least 20 Social Security “credits” over the past 10 years.  If you work on a full time basis, you receive one credit per fiscal quarter.  However, there are some exceptions to this rule – even if you have not worked on a full time basis for the past 10 years, you might still be eligible for the program.

The work requirement is typically waived for those who can prove with their medical records that they became disabled before the age of 22.  Since applicants that have this particular attribute would not have been able to acquire the 20 required credits (unless they had been working full time since the age of 12, which is highly unlikely) and thus they will be able to receive Social Security Disability Insurance by virtue of collecting on their parents’ work credits or benefits should the parents also be disabled.  The parents in this case will receive no loss of benefits should this occur.
