What Happens During the Appeal Process
Posted in: Social Security Disability on September 20th, 2011

disability appealMost applicants to the Social Security Disability Insurance program end up in appeal. This is what makes the entire process take so long to complete. An appeal for Social Security Disability Insurance can last up to two years in certain parts of the country. This article refers to what happens during that appeals process and what to expect should you be undergoing  appeals.

This Is What Happens

The first thing you must do is send a signed appeals request to the Social Security Administration, then the Social Security Administration will review your denied application to be sure that it was correctly filled out and all of the information is complete. It is not uncommon for the Social Security Administration to request more information at this time. The Social Security Administration will then send your application to the office that will determine if you are disabled under Social Security law.

At this point, this office will then review your application again and request any missing or additional information they may require. They are particularly interested in any new medical records you may have submitted at this time. You will then be given the opportunity to have a face-to-face interview with the individual who makes the ultimate decision on your case. After your interview, the office that is in charge of making the decision will notify you of their decision in writing.
