The Trial of Transfers

Social Security application

The fact of the matter is that the social security disability insurance program as well as the supplemental security income program is completely overwhelmed with requests.  Due to the tough economic times over the past decade or so, the number of applicants for these programs has skyrocketed, and certain parts of the country are finding themselves overwhelmed with applicants.

What’s a transfer?

A transfer is just what it sounds like – if you apply for social security benefits in your jurisdiction, there’s a chance that your application might be forwarded to another part of the country.  Typically the forwarding won’t go very far – for example, if you applied for benefits in Cleveland, Ohio, your application could possibly be sent to Dayton, but it likely wouldn’t be mailed to Miami. This possibility, however, does add yet another barrier between applicants and disability payments.

The statistics don’t lie: as of last year, Cleveland transferred more than 5,000 cases out of its jurisdiction, Detroit more than 4,700, and Orlando, Fla., more than 3,500, just to name a few.

If your social security disability insurance application gets sent to another area of the country, you shouldn’t panic – it doesn’t mean that you won’t get approved.  What it does mean is that you’ll have to play a little more of the waiting game – and perhaps even travel a bit, depending on what the new jurisdiction requires.  Be sure to keep track of your application at all times so that you know who is considering it, and where!
