The History of Social Security Disability Insurance
Posted in: Social Security Disability on September 23rd, 2011

disability insuranceIf you are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, it can be helpful to know a little bit about the history of the program for which you are applying.  Social Security Disability Insurance is a little bit different than Supplemental Security Income. Social Security Disability Insurance is more closely related to the traditional Social Security that individuals gather when they retire, as compared to Supplemental Security Income, which is more closely related to welfare.

Where Did It Come From?

Social Security Disability Insurance was created in the 1950s in order to protect Americans who became disabled at a later point in their life. In the event that an American citizen suffers an illness or injury that renders them unable to complete their jobs, as they previously were able to, Social Security Disability Insurance is intended to compensate them for the time they spent as part of the American workforce. In order to collect Social Security Disability Insurance, the applicant generally must have put at least 20 credits worth of work into the Social Security system. Generally this means that the applicant has been in the workforce for at least ten years.

This is markedly different when compared to Supplemental Security Income. Supplemental Security Income is meant for those who have been permanently disabled for an extended period of time. Many individuals who are blind or have had another disability since a very young age receive Supplemental Security Income. Be sure that you are aware of all types of disability insurance that are available for you to apply for, and use that knowledge to assist you in making the correct choice for you.
