The Disabled Person’s Right To Work
Posted in: Social Security Disability on August 1st, 2011

Just recently, President Obama issued a statement that commemorates the 21st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, or the ADA.  The purpose of this act at the start was to prevent discrimination against those with disabilities in the workforce and in other areas of life.

However, despite the strides that the Americans with Disabilities Act has made for those that have disabilities, the fact remains that there is a lower percentage of Americans with disabilities in the workforce as compared to ten years ago.

Why Is This?

There are a number of different factors in this, but some parties are starting to blame Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income for the lowering amount of disabled Americans in the workforce.  The argument is that these programs make it less attractive to work, and thus many disabled individuals that could be working are instead opting out and applying for governmental programs.

The other argument is that the economy is much worse today as compared to ten years ago, and whenever employment is difficult to find for non-disabled people, disabled people tend to suffer more.  The unemployed rate among disabled people is indeed higher than it has been in twenty years, but the same goes for non-disabled individuals, as well.

Both camps do agree on one fact: as of right now, if the situation is not changed, the money that funds both Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Insurance will run out in 2018.  Something needs to be done to help the disabled back into the workforce – but a concrete solution has yet to be found.
