SSDI Verses Retirement Benefits
Posted in: Social Security Disability on September 6th, 2011

benefitsWhile both Social Security Disability Insurance and Social Security Retirement Benefits are paid from the same source and both are managed by the Social Security Administration, there are some differences between these types of benefits, and it is good to understand these differences should you be looking to apply to either one or the other of these programs.

What’s The Scoop?

In general, Social Security Disability benefits do tend to be slightly more generous than Social Security Retirement Benefits.  This is due to the fact that those who receive Social Security Disability Insurance are younger – these benefits turn into retirement benefits when the person receiving the payments reaches retirement age.

Another component of Social Security Disability Insurance that is lacking in the Social Security Retirements Benefits program is the fact that after two years on Social Security Disability Insurance, the recipient is automatically eligible for Medicare.  Medicare is program that is paid by the government that helps defer the costs of ongoing health issues.  Those who are simply getting the Social Security Retirement Benefits do not get Medicare offered to them.

The biggest difference is of course, the age at which you can apply for both programs.  The earliest that you can draw on your Social Security Retirement Benefits is 62, while you can apply for SSDI when you become disabled, no matter how old you happen to be.
