Special Considerations For Veterans
Posted in: Social Security Disability on August 2nd, 2011

disability for veteransIt can be difficult to receive Social Security Disability Insurance for anybody – the wait times and the increasingly strict requirements are acting as a barrier to many people who are trying to get these vital forms of support.

One of the most important populations that need support is injured veterans.  Many veterans are not aware of the considerations that they receive when it comes to Social Security Disability Insurance, which are slightly different than those that are given to average civilian applicants.

The Differences

First of all, it’s important to know that the Social Security Administration, not the Department of Veteran Affairs, controls Social Security Disability Insurance.  It is an entirely different entity with a different application process.

Another thing to know is that just because you receive some forms of support from the Department of Veterans Affairs does not mean that you are ineligible for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits.  Most of the time, payments that you get from the military are not counted against your “income.”  “Income” in the world of Social Security Disability  eligibility is how much monetary support you get from outside sources.

However, there are certain forms of income that are not counted against your general “income” as the Social Security Administration defines it.  Many times, benefits that veterans get are not counted against your ‘income,’ and thus you can get both Social Security Disability Insurance and veteran’s benefits at the same time.

If you are a veteran who could be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, be sure to contact the Social Security Administration at either www.ssa.gov or call at 800-777-1213 for more information.
