Social Security Disability Insurance and Disability

social security disabilityIf things are not changed regarding the current way that the system works, Social Security Disability Insurance will run out of money in the next six years.  This will present a host of problems, both to the government and to individuals who rely on these payments in order to ensure that they get access to the funds and the health care that they need to survive.

Who Should Pay For Disability?

One of the most recently suggested reforms is to change some of the incentives that the current system has.  Under the Americans With Disabilities Act, an employer is responsible for shouldering the cost of providing an employee with a disability the accommodations they need to work.  This is intended to save the employee from having to pay for the accommodations themselves, but it often results in an employer encouraging an employee to apply for disability, because in this way, the cost of providing for the disability is given to the government and not the employer.

On the other hand, is it fair to require that an employer shoulder the cost of providing for an employee’s injury?  Workman’s compensation exists for individuals that sustain disabling injuries while on the job, but Social Security Disability Insurance is for individuals who were disabled through no fault of the employer.  This is one of the many issues that will have to be resolved if Social Security Disability Insurance is to be saved for future generations.  The problems surrounding Social Security Disability Insurance are tough, but solutions must be found.
