Does Social Security Disability Insurance Stop People From Working?
Posted in: Social Security Disability on September 8th, 2011

disability benefitsDue to the fact that Social Security Disability Insurance is under so much strain recently, there have been several studies done to measure the feasibility of the program and whether or not it hurts more than it helps.  The Social Security Disability Insurance recipient in question is not the terminally ill leukemia patient, but rather the one who suffers from bipolar disorder or one of the other diseases that qualifies one for Social Security Disability Insurance but yet does not necessarily result in death.

What Are The Findings?

The Rand Corporation found that out of people who were denied by the toughest Social Security Disability Insurance examiners, about 60% of the group, which Rand considered “marginally disabled,” would have gone back to work had they not received benefits on appeal about two years later.  This group tended to be younger recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance, most of who have mental disabilities and were likely to be low wage earners rather than completely unemployed before receiving disability benefits.

What has to happen if SSDI is to survive is that examiners and those applying for the program alike need to look harder at the qualifications that one has to reach to be considered totally unable to work.  If this does not occur, the program will run out of money and those who desperately need money from SSDI payments will have no further recourse to turn to.  If you happen to be aware of Social Security Disability Insurance fraud, report it immediately.
