Does ADA Help Or Hurt?
Posted in: Social Security Disability on September 13th, 2011

disability benefitsEverybody knows that Social Security Disability Insurance is in trouble.  It has been projected that if things stay the way that they are, the program could be slated to run out of money as early as six years from today.  This would put a lot of families in the lurch, and really harm a lot of people who rely on Social Security Disability Insurance in order to cover their bills and get the medical insurance they need. Social Security Disability Insurance is in peril, and it needs to be saved.

How ADA And Social Security Disability Insurance Work Together

There has been a lot of talk about the Americans With Disabilities Act and how it affects the present and future of Social Security Disability Insurance.  Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the employer is responsible for paying for certain items or accommodations that disabled employees require in order to remain on the job.  Many experts are now saying that this rule is actually putting excess pressure on Social Security Disability Insurance – due to the fact that if the disabled person continues to work, the financial burden is on the employer in order to create a place where that individual can productively work.  On the other hand, if the disabled person applies and receives Social Security Disability Insurance, the cost is then deferred to the federal government.

This is one of the things that needs to be tweaked in order to save Social Security Disability Insurance.  The fact that it is cheaper for an employer to pass a disabled employee off onto the government rather than to compensate for the disability is a problem that needs to be fixed.
