Age, Disability, and Percentages

ssdiThe future of Social Security Disability Insurance is at risk.  The program itself is expected to run out of money in the next six years, which will cause serious problems for the people that rely on Social Security Disability Insurance to manage the funds of their every day lives.  This is a serious social problem that the country needs to deal with before it is too late – and some of the best minds are on the case.

The Numbers

The demographic of 50-59-year-old individuals has grown substantially over the past ten years in this country – it is estimated by 42 percent.  This is a huge growth, due to the fact that the American population is aging and the baby boomers are starting to edge into retirement.  Is the aging of the population responsible for the demise of Social Security Disability Insurance?

When taken in to account with the fact that the number of disability applicants has risen by a whopping 73% over the same amount of time, the answer to this question is a little less clear cut than originally anticipated: the aging population is probably not the sole cause, after all.  While the shift in age demographic no doubt does comprise a bit of the strain on Social Security Disability Insurance, the fact remains that the growth is ultimately encouraged by other things.  More research on this fascinating subject is to come and hopefully a solution will make itself known as well!
