Medicare and Social SecuritySocial Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income are two different programs that are offered to help those who have become or have always been unable to participate as part of the work first due to permanent injury or severe illness.

Both programs are managed by the Social Security Administration, and both programs have a similar process when it comes to applying.  However, people who are approved for one program are considered ineligible for the other, so it’s important to know where you stand if you are looking to apply for either of these programs.

Medicare And Medicaid

One of the easiest ways to determine which form of benefits that you can apply for is by looking at the sort of governmental medical insurance that comes along with it.  Those who are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance become eligible for Medicare after two years on the program. This is apposed to Supplemental Security Income, where those individuals generally receive Medicaid.  This is due to the fact that those who get Supplemental Security Income generally have never worked in their lives or have been unable to work much due to a long term illness or injury; those who get Social Security Disability Insurance have worked in the American workforce for at least a few years prior to becoming eligible for disability payments.

Be sure that you understand the difference between these two programs before applying for disability.  The average wait from the beginning of the application process to acceptance for disability benefits averages at 500 days, currently – so be careful which you apply for, or it could take longer!
