Representation and Supplemental Security Income
Posted in: Disability Lawyer on September 9th, 2011

disability lawyerIf you are applying for Supplemental Security Income, you have the right to representation for your case.  In general, your chances are higher if you choose to hire representation, such as a disability lawyer, for your case.  Many people who end up getting denied after their first application period will hire representation for their appeal.

The Ins And Outs Of Representation

First, if somebody is helping you prepare an application over the internet, there are a couple of things that the representative may not do: first, the representative may not electronically sign the application on the behalf of the applicant.  Only the applicant him or herself may do so.  In the event that the applicant wishes to name their representative to act on their behalf in all matters, there needs to be a written statement from the applicant (or his or her legal guardians) giving the representative the right to act as he or she sees fit.  If this is not done, the applicant or the individual with power of attorney must sign off on all decisions made by the representative.

These rules are in place to ensure that the application process is kept as fair and clear as it can be for those who are using representatives.  It is important that the applicant retains control of most aspects of the process, even if he or she is unable to be present at all of the proceedings.

Be sure to take your time when deciding on representation for your Supplemental Security Income application, should you decide to hire somebody.  A good representative can cut your wait time in half, but a bad one is just as bad as having no representation at all!
