What Medical Conditions Are Considered Disabling?
Posted in: Conditions/Illness on September 15th, 2011

disability conditionsThere are many people who are thinking about applying for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Insurance.  Both of these are programs that are designed to help Americans that struggle with disabilities.  The difference between the two programs mostly depends on whether or not you have worked in the system over the past ten years – those who have are typically eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance, while those who have not are more likely to be eligible for Supplemental Security Income. Social Security Disability Insurance is funded by taxpayer money, much like the retirement version of Social Security, while Supplemental Security Income is set up more like welfare.

What Is On The List?

If you happen to have one of a number of different medical conditions, you could be eligible for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income.  It is important to be aware of the specific rules and regulations surrounding disability at your time of application, as these are always changing, and it is good to stay on top of the trends and how things are changing.

To be considered disabled, your injury or illness has to be severe enough to permanently affect your ability to work.  Qualifying illnesses that are considered disabling are any form of cancer, fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, or loss of vision or hearing.  There are several other diseases that could fit this bill as well, but all of these are high-target disabilities that generally get fast tracked.  Talk with the Social Security Administration to learn more.
