Take Your Medicine
Posted in: Conditions/Illness on August 10th, 2011

take medicineThe crux behind being considered eligible for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Benefits is that you are judged to have a medical condition or mental illness that restricts your ability to work.  One of the key elements to being considered eligible for either of these programs is the fact that you are making an active attempt to remedy your medical problems while you are getting benefits.

Compliance, Compliance, Compliance

In the event that you are given medication to take to help improve your condition, it is of the utmost importance that you continue to take it throughout your duration of receiving benefits.  For example, if you have asthma and you refuse to take your medications, it is likely that the problem will be come worse and worse and ultimate limit you much more than if you had taken the medication.  If a doctor reports that you have not been taking your medication to the Social Security Administration, you might find yourself ineligible for benefits, even if your disability has worsened since getting accepted!

Don’t think that the Social Security Administration will never find out.  When you get accepted to either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, you’ll find that every three or seven years you must undergo a Continuing Disability Review to ensure that you are still eligible for the program.  If the Social Security Administration goes through your medical records and finds you guilty of noncompliance, you and your benefits might be in jeopardy!
