Does Depression Make You Disabled?
Posted in: Conditions/Illness on July 19th, 2011

The scope of this question is much too large to be adequately discussed here, but insofar as Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income are concerned, the answer is a definitive “maybe.”

Depression Slows You Down

Depression Disability BenefitsAnybody who has ever been affected by clinical depression understands how it can sap you of the will to do work.  However, there has been a hotbed of argument whether or not you are considered disabled by the government: after all, having a mental condition that makes you unwilling to leave the house does not necessarily mean that you are physically unable to leave the house as somebody who is confined to a wheelchair might be.

The interesting bit here is how it affects the children: children of individuals who are considered so disabled that they qualify either for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income was reported to be thirty times higher in 2007 as compared to 1987.  The main mental disorder causing this shift has been the higher rate of the diagnoses of depression.

This leads back to the grand old argument of antidepressants being over prescribed, which is an argument that will likely continue on for some time, but the ways in which it affects disability payments over the long term remains to be seen.  If you happen to be on disability or are considering applying for it for reasons related to depression, be sure to do research before going through with the application process – the rules are always changing!
