Can A Doctor’s Letter Help?
Posted in: Conditions/Illness on August 24th, 2011

doctors noteMany people, while going through the long application process for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, will put a lot of time into thinking about ways to help their case.  One of the most contested ideas is the validity of a physician’s supporting statement – can having such a document help your case?  Some say that it’s the ticket to getting automatically approved for benefits, while others claim that it doesn’t help at all.

An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

As with many other things in the Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income application game, the real answer is the following: it depends.  Generally speaking, on your initial application round, a physician’s letter won’t help matters much.  The first time that your claim for disability goes through the system, the disability examiners are simply looking through your medical records for data about your medical condition.  A physician’s letter matters less at this stage.

But if you end up at the hearing level of the process – as most cases do – a detailed physician’s letter speaking about your disability and inability to work can do wonders when it comes to speaking with a judge.  Most judges realize that they are not medical experts, and therefore a verified letter from a doctor explaining why you are disabled and how you are eligible for benefits can really help win your case over.  So the long and the short answer to the question asked is “yes, but only during certain parts of the process!”
