Work With Your Doctors

disabilityWhen you are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, it can help to get your physician involved with the battle for your benefits.  It’s not easy to get Social Security Disability Insurance, of course, and you’ll likely need all of the help that you get through the process.  Keep in mind that the average application for Social Security Disability Insurance requires at least two years’ worth of time in the system, so be sure to bring along your patience!

Speaking with your physician can help make your application go through much easier.  This is because so much of the Social Security Disability Insurance application relies on medical records.  This is often one of the parts of the process that applicants have the most trouble with, as individuals who do not have health insurance often have a hard time scheduling regular medical appointments.  But even in the event that you do not have health insurance, check out free clinics for options or even go to the emergency room.  It’s important to have medical documentation of your disability – without this, you’re sunk.

Talking with your physician can help give him or her the time that they needs to compile your medical documentation to help you better prepare for your case.  It is likely that your physician is familiar with the disability insurance application process, but giving them advanced warning can really go a long way toward ensuring that your application goes as smoothly as possible.  Remember to keep the channels of communication open, and good luck!
