What Is An Earning Requirement?
Posted in: Benefits on September 21st, 2011

earningsIf you are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, you need to be familiar with what earning requirements are and how you can meet them. There are two different earning tests that you must take and pass in order to receive disability benefits.  This is to ensure that Social Security Disability Insurance benefits go to those who need them most.

What Is The Difference

The first earnings test is known as a “recent work” test. This is based off of the age you were when you became disabled. It is intended to measure the amount of work that you are judged to still be able to do in spite of your disability. Factors that are considered include your age, education, and previous work experience.  The second test is called a “duration of work” test and is designed to figure out how long you have been working in the American work system, and thus if you are available for benefits based on your time working. Generally speaking, the older you are the more time you are expected to have put into the system. If you have not put enough work credit hours into the system to be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance, then you might want to consider applying for Supplemental Security Income instead.

Earning requirements are in place to ensure that Social Security Disability Insurance goes the people who need the money the most. Be sure that you are able to meet and pass both your recent work test and the duration of work test, if you are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance. This will ensure that your application has a smaller chance of being denied.
