What is a Continuing Disability Review?
Posted in: Benefits on August 9th, 2011

disability benefitsOnce you are approved to receive either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, the Social Security Administration will then require that you occasionally undergo a Continuing Disability Review to make sure that you are still disabled and thus eligible to continue receiving disability benefits.

When Do They Happen?

The frequency of a Continuing Disability Review depends entirely on the nature of your illness or injury.  Generally, they happen every three to seven years, depending on how severe your disability is judged to be.  If you have a case that could get better, it is likely that your Continuing Disability Reviews will happen every three years.  If instead you have a terminal or a disability that is judged to be near permanent, your Reviews will likely happen on the seventh year.

Mental illnesses are likely to receive a three-year Continuing Disability Report.  If you have a situation that is clearly permanent, like an amputation, you still must have a Continuing Disability Report at least every seven years since it is required by law.  If you are over the age of fifty, it is also likely that you will get the seven year review rather than the three, since generally disabling conditions sustained at or above this age are unlikely to improve.  The younger you are, the more frequent your Continuing Disability Reviews will be.  For children under the age of 18, the Continuing Disability Reviews begin when the child becomes a legal adult, and then are likely to occur every three years.
