What About Back Pay?
Posted in: Benefits on August 22nd, 2011

disability benefitsIf you apply for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, the first thing that you’re likely to notice is that it takes a long time for you to get payments.  Often, a claim can take over two years to process. While this is very problematic during the time between applying for disability benefits and receiving, the fact of the matter is that back pay exists for a reason.

What Is Back Pay?

Essentially, back pay is money that the Social Security Administration hands out to individuals who have been approved for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, but had to wait a long time for those benefits to be awarded.  The assumption is that you have been out of work during the entire time that your case has been pending, and thus had no income during those lag months.

This is true for most individuals. That is why it is important to prepare financially before applying for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income.  Not all people who apply for SSDI or SSI will get it, so it’s best to approach the situation assuming that you will not.  But in the event that you are in the position to receive it, it can help make the process of getting back on your feet after going through the grueling application process a little bit easier.  And with Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income in your hand and back pay in your pocket, life will be much easier!
