The One Year Cut?
Posted in: Benefits on August 11th, 2011

disability benefitsSocial Security Disability Insurance is in jeopardy, and this is no secret.  The fact of the matter is that much more money goes out in payments each month to Social Security Disability Insurance recipients than money comes in through tax revenues.  This means that Social Security Disability Insurance could be bankrupt as early as 2027, and lawmakers and Social Security Administration workers alike are searching for ways to help the program stay alive and get money to those who need it.

The One-Year Itch

Research has been done showing that many people who qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance could theoretically get back to work with the right medical treatment and/or psychological counseling.  In fact, there is already a reviews system in place called the Continuing Disability Reviews, but these only occur once every three to seven years.

Evidence has shown that individuals who have been on Social Security Disability Insurance for more than a year, however, have a much lower motivation to get back out and work as compared to those who have been on the program for a year or less.  Many people are suggesting that there need to be more frequent and more exacting Continuing Disability Reviews, to ensure that the people who are on the program are still in direct need of the money.  Whether or not the Social Security Administration has the resources to enact such a program is suspect, but this is one of many ways that Social Security Disability Insurance could be saved.
