The Ins and Outs of Continuing Disability Reviews
Posted in: Benefits on August 12th, 2011

disability reviewsThe rules and laws that surround the business of being considered disabled by the federal government are always changing.  This might make some people nervous when it comes time for their Continuing Disability Reviews – or the oversight that the Social Security Administration occasionally puts recipients of both Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income through to ensure that they are still eligible to receive benefits.

What If The Rules Have Changed?

Assuming that you have received disability benefits for a certain condition, the constantly changing rules regarding disability might make you nervous.  After all, what if the very condition that you were judged disabled for is suddenly knocked off the list when it comes time for your Continuing Disability Review?

In this instance, at least, you need not fear.  If you have been judged disabled due to a medical or mental condition that has then been removed from the list, you will still continue to receive your benefits so long as your condition has not improved.  A good example of this is ADHD. Back in the 1990s, lots of children were judged disabled due to this condition, and thus started receiving benefits.  Now, it is much harder for children to get disability benefits based on this condition unless the syndrome is very, very severe. But if a child with a case of ADHD was determined disabled prior to the rules changing, he will still continue to get benefits so long as his condition has shown no sign of improving.

If you have been judged eligible for benefits, you will continue to receive them as long as your condition has remained the same.  The rules may change, but the only thing that matters when it comes to your disability payments is your health!
