The 24 Month Mark
Posted in: Benefits on September 7th, 2011

benefit calendarIf you happen to receive Social Security Disability Insurance, you might be aware of the fact that you are eligible for Medicare.  This happens after your 24th month on the program.  However, there are other changes that happen along with this switch to Medicare, so hold on to your hats and get ready for some government jargon.

Receiving Medicare

Those of you who are not familiar with the Social Security Disability Insurance process might be scratching your heads and wondering what Social Security Disability Insurance recipients are supposed to do during the 24 month inter-term between being accepted for Social Security Disability benefits and receiving Medicare.  The fact of the matter is that during this time, most individuals get enrolled on their state insurance programs.

How this compares to Medicare depends on the state that you are living in.  There are some states that have insurance programs what will make Medicare seem like a breath of fresh air, and then there are others that are much more comprehensive and you may not want to switch to the federal program.  Unfortunately you will not have a choice in this matter, and in order to switch over to Medicare you might end up having to go through an appeals process, particularly if your Social Security Disability Insurance payments are too high to typically allow you to qualify for Medicare.

It can be a frustrating process, but be sure to prepare for it if you are close to hitting your 24th month on the Social Security Disability Insurance program.
