Social Security Benefits

Both Supplemental Security Income (also known as SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (likewise known as SSDI) are benefits paid out by the federal government with the aim of ensuring that those who have been made unable to work due to illness or permanent disability have a way to support themselves and their families.

Benefits in Pennsylvania

A good example state to check out when it comes to evaluating the process of getting either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income is Pennsylvania.  The average wait between date of application and date of acceptance for claims in either one of these departments takes an average of two and a half years here.  Believe it or not, this is actually lower than the national average!  Be sure to check out the averages in your state to see what kind of a wait you might have between applying for benefits and receiving them.

The Difference?

Keep in mind that Social Security Disability Insurance is mainly intended for those who have worked for some or all of their lives proceeding the illness or disability that precludes them from working.  On the other hand, Supplemental Security Income is for those who have never been able to work due to a lifelong illness or injury.  The process for applying for benefits for either of these is distinct -make sure you understand what you are eligible for before you apply!  There’s nothing worse than waiting for your case to get approved, only to learn that you applied for the wrong one!
