Why Are Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits Unsustainable?
Posted in: Benefits on September 26th, 2011

disability benefitsIt’s no secret that, over the past ten years, Social Security Disability Insurance has become an increasingly-discussed problem in both political and private sectors. It has been said that if the program continues expenditures at its current rate, by 2014 the entire Social Security Disability Insurance program will be bankrupt. Should this be the case, it would render thousands of Americans without recourse to basic needs due to the forcible revoking of disability benefits.

The program itself was originally created in 1956 in order to protect Americans between the ages of 50 and 64 who had become currently disabled. Of course, over the life of the program, the restrictions have changed somewhat. In the modern day, anybody who has put in a certain amount of time to the workforce may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits.

Research Shows

According to a study done by the CATO Institute, Social Security Stability Insurance benefits have increased by a whopping 119% since 1995. This is due in part to the relaxation of the original parameters of the program. Many people are suggesting that now Social Security Disability Insurance should be privatized. This is an interesting argument that is worth considering. During the Bush Administration, it was suggested that basic Social Security also be privatized, but this did not occur.

There are myriad of reasons why Social Security Disability Insurance has become an unsustainable program. The bigger problem at hand, however, is the issue of ensuring that the Americans who rely on these payments are still able to receive the benefits they need.
