How Much Does It Pay?
Posted in: Benefits on July 18th, 2011

Social Security Check

Of course, the main reason why people reach for disability payments is that it is often one of the main ways that a person unable to work can generate money to live on.  Especially with times being as tough as they are, families often don’t have enough to support a disabled person on their own, and social security disability benefits are supposed to alleviate the burden of living with a disability.

But Does It Work?

There are two main forms of disability insurance through social security: there is the social security disability insurance, or SSDI, that is meant for those who have worked, paid into the system, and then suddenly find themselves with a disability that renders them unable to maintain employment.  The lesser-used supplemental security income, or SSI, is meant for destitute individuals who have never and can never work due to their disabilities.  Both kinds of social security have the exact same application process.

Generally speaking, those who are awarded social security disability insurance are awarded it at an average of 1,500 USD a month.  Supplemental security income comes in a little lower, at about 1,000 USD a month.

Obviously, this is not a very large sum of money and for many people it’s not even enough to pay bills and the mortgage.  The idea behind social security disability insurance is that it is supposed to be a temporary measure for the majority of people.  Social security is difficult to live off of on its own merit, so even if you do receive the payments, don’t expect it to cover all of your needs!
