How Far Does Back Pay Go?
Posted in: Benefits on August 24th, 2011

back pay benefitsWhile the application process for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income can literally take years, the good news is that in many cases, you may be eligible for back pay.  Of course, this is a point of interest for many, and lots of people want to know just how far back the back pay can go.

The Date of Back Pay

Social Security benefits of either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income are only paid from the time that the disability begins.  This is known as the onset date, and it must be established before back pay can be determined.  Once the onset date has been determined, the next step is figuring out the application date for disability  benefits – this is one of the reasons why it is important to apply as early as possible for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income.  In the case of Social Security Disability Insurance, back pay can be awarded up to 12 months retroactive to the date of application.

Where Supplemental Security Insurance is concerned, back pay is only payable from the time of application, and there is no retroactive payment before this.  Generally speaking, whether you are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, it’s common for applicants to receive at least a year’s worth of back pay, mostly due to the fact that the application process takes so long.
