Disability Benefits Secrets Everyone Ought to Know
Posted in: Benefits on March 15th, 2013

Both the state and federal government provide Social Security disability benefits for those who need it. Unfortunately, making a disability benefits claim with the United States government can be overwhelming for some people, especially those who have previously applied and were disapproved. However, filing for disability benefits doesn’t have to always result in denial. By following these secrets from a former disability examiner, you can increase your chances of having your claim approved.

Advice to Qualify for Disability Benefits

The Social Security Administration has stringent rules when it comes to approving requests for disability benefits. To maximize your chance of being approved:

1. File for disability immediately. Once you realize you are unable to work, do not wait to file for disability benefits. Claims can take a while to process. Those who wait to file because of financial hardship will have to continue waiting in financial hardship until the claim is approved or denied. Filing immediately can help avoid a continued financial predicament.
2. Seek help for the application. If you have any questions or issues with the paperwork during the application process, seek the advice of an expert. Many people who have their disability benefits claim denied were denied because their application was incomplete or done incorrectly.
3. Hire an attorney. If you filled out the application properly and were still denied for the disability benefits you deserve, hire an attorney to help you appeal the denial. Remember, however, that you only have 60 days from the denial to appeal it. Do not miss the deadline and ensure that your attorney knows the 60 day deadline as well.
4. Schedule regular appointments with your doctor. Your disability benefits will largely be evaluated based on your medical records. It’s a good idea to see the doctor regularly so that you have a long record. Furthermore, physicians are more likely to cooperate if they feel like you are not abusing the system. After all, those with a severe medical condition or disability should be visiting the doctor often anyways.
