Can I Work?

disability benefitsOne of the most common myths regarding Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income is that claimants cannot have any other sort of income whatsoever outside of the disability payments.  The fact of the matter is that this is not true, but if you are interested in continuing to receive disability benefits, it is to your advantage to understand the laws regarding Social Security Disability Insurance, Supplemental Security Income, and working down to the nitty gritty.  The Social Security Administration likes to keep its data to the letter, and so should you!

What Are The Rules?

The important thing to remember is that however much money you make, it cannot exceed the sustainable gainful activity level.  The sustainable gainful activity level is the minimum amount of money that the Social Security Administration is deemed necessary for a single individual to have.  This amount changes by year and it is important to check out the Social Security Administration website or call a local office in order to make sure that whatever additional income you have does not exceed this amount.  In the event that you make more money per month than the sustainable gainful activity level denotes, your benefits will be removed.

Be aware that the sustainable gainful activity level is based off of gross income, not net – meaning that it takes into consideration the money that you make before taxes.  So don’t count on Uncle Sam taking a bit off the top and helping you keep your disability payments!
