Why Does It Take So Long?
Posted in: Application Process on August 19th, 2011

disability benefits The amount of time it takes for an application to get through the process depends on a number of different variables, depending on the level of the process at which the award is made.  To put some numbers into the equation, in 2009 there were 2,816,244 applications for Social Security Disability Insurance.  Combine these numbers with the fact that each year sees a longer and longer backlog of applicants, and you’ll understand why the average wait time for receiving benefits is so long.

What Causes The Backlog And Wait?

Well, the primary reason for the backlog has to do with the fact that the number of applications for Social Security Disability Insurance in particular has risen dramatically over the past five or ten years.  With the economy in the sort of shape that it is in, people who are more mildly disabled are finding it harder and harder to participate in the current economy.  The more applications there are, the longer it takes the Social Security Administration to go through the applications.

In addition to this problem, there has been a steady increase in the retirement of Social Security Administration workers.  This sounds as though it would not necessarily affect Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, but the Social Security Administration is strapped for cash as it is, and they haven’t been able to hire individuals at the same rate at which they are retiring.  Fewer employees mean that applications take longer.

Be sure to bring your patience with you while you are applying for disability benefits!
