Who is Social Security Disability Insurance For?
Posted in: Application Process on August 11th, 2011

disability benefitsWith the fact that the Social Security Disability Insurance is running out of money fast, many people are wracking their brains to come up with ways to save the program.  This has made a crucial question come up: who is Social Security Disability Insurance for?  Who deserves it?  How long should disability benefits last for different people?

How Do We Decide?

Originally, Social Security Disability Insurance was created for those who could no longer work due to injury or disability.  This is still true, but the fact of the matter is that there are a lot of people who are drawing on the program who could theoretically get back to work if only they had the right training or medical attention.

More and more people are beginning to say that the focus for Social Security Disability Insurance needs to be changed.  As opposed to giving it out to anybody who has suffered a debilitating injury or illness, instead more focused attention should be paid to the extent of the disability and how it affects the individual person.  In the event that an individual could get back in the workplace if only they had the right tools and resources to make it happen, this person would instead receive vocational therapy and medical attention as opposed to continuing Social Security Disability Insurance.  This would help get those who could get back to work back out to living productive lives, while those who are permanently disabled remain protected by the program.  Time will tell what will happen, but changes definitely need to happen soon!
