Who Is Awarded, Who Denied?
Posted in: Application Process on July 19th, 2011

social security judgeIf you happen to be applying for social security disability insurance or supplemental security income in San Antonio, Texas, your case has a chance of being reviewed by one of 17 judges.  While you would assume that judges are impartial, the fact of the matter is that for those who apply in San Antonio, which randomly selected judge that presides over the case can have a very real impact on whether that payment is awarded or not.

Like a Lottery

One of the judges in San Antonio awards social security disability benefits to a mere fourteen percent of all cases seen.  Another hands out benefits to the tune of seventy two percent of the time.

Clearly, this is a huge disparity and it highlights how unclear the rules can be for deciding on who gets benefits and who does not.  The problems inherent with this are said to be worse now than a few years ago, primarily due to the fact that many more people have been applying for social security disability insurance as compared to twenty years ago.  The economy is rough, and the population keeps getting older and larger, so more people want these benefits.

However, the roulette-like application process has put many people off – and even those who end up getting social security disability benefits still remain impoverished.  It’s definitely a problematic situation that the government has not yet come up with a viable solution for.  But be sure to do careful research on any judge on your personal disability case – it could matter a lot!
