The Waiting Period
Posted in: Application Process on September 13th, 2011

social security benefitsOne of the most frustrating aspects of either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Insurance is the fact that you need to wait at least five months after getting approved in order to start receiving benefits.  This can be very frustrating, considering that the wait time for receiving either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Insurance is nearly two years as it is.  This means that even after you have jumped through the hoops and been approved, you still have to survive for five more months without any sort of benefits.

Why Wait?

The reason for the five month waiting period is that this time is meant to ensure that when you get approved for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income, you are disabled enough to warrant receiving the benefits.  The idea is that both Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income is meant for those who are disabled over the long term.  If you still have your disabling condition after the five month period, then you are disabled enough to continue receiving the benefits.

Many people are in outcry over this rule just because of the sheer amount of time that individuals spend waiting while applying to Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income.  But as for now this will continue to be the rule, so be sure to have plenty of resources on your hands during and after applying for disability benefits, and good luck with the process!
