social security benefitsIf you are in the process of applying for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security income, being aware of the particulars of the process is key to receiving your disability benefits in a timely manner.  No matter how prepared you are for the process, of course, the average time between applying for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income is about two years, so you’ll be in for a wait either way.  But understanding the process and what is going on throughout this time period will make your application process easier and much less stressful.

The Process For Social Security Disability Insurance

Since the application volume for Social Security Disability Insurance is particularly high, we have complied a brief list of how claims are generally processed by the Social Security Administration.

  • Is the applicant performing a substantial gainful activity, such as working 40 hours a week?  If yes, deny.  If no, continue to the next step.
  • Is the impairment of the applicant severe?  If no, deny.  If yes, continue to the next step.
  • Does the impairment meet or equal the severity of impairments in the Listing of Impairments as defined by the Social Security Administration?  If no, deny.  If yes, allow the claim and continue to the next step.
  • Is the applicant able to perform past work even with the disability?  If yes, deny.  If no, continue to the next step.
  • Is the applicant able to perform any work in the current economy?  If yes, deny.  If no, award benefits.
