The Judge Matters
Posted in: Application Process on September 27th, 2011

disability appealIf you are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, you’re likely aware that the process of getting through the application itself is a challenge.  There are several forms you’ll have to fill out along the way – if there’s anything that you’ll learn about the government through applying for SSDI, you’ll understand that there is a lot of paper-pushing involved.

The bad news is that the majority of disability applications get denied the first time that they go through the system.  This is part of the reason why it takes so long for applications to go through, and the wait time for benefits in some areas of the country can be longer than two years.  If you go through the appeals process for Social Security Disability Insurance, you’ll eventually end up meeting your ALJ, or Administrative Law Judge.

Matters Of The Court

The job of the Administrative Law Judge is to hear your case on an individual basis and decide whether or not you deserve disability insurance.  In the event that your claim gets denied, you’ll have to go on to another level of the process.  In the event that it is not, your award will be given to you, and you will begin receiving benefits after six months from the date you were approved.

Keep in mind that the judge plays a pivotal role on whether or not you get the benefits you need – some judges are incredibly lenient, while others are much more strict.  You will have no control over which variety of judge you get, so be sure that you go into your Social Security Disability Insurance hearing with all of the information you can muster!
