Social Security Disability Insurance and Expedited Processing
Posted in: Application Process on September 14th, 2011

veteran benefitsIf you happen to be a veteran of the armed forces, there are a couple of incentives that you might not be aware of when considering applying for Social Security Disability Insurance.  These benefits do not necessarily apply to those who are applying for Supplemental Security Income, but it is highly unlikely that a veteran of the armed forces would be applying for Supplemental Security Income – if you have worked for at least ten years, you should apply for Social Security Disability Insurance.

How Can You Make It Happen?

The first thing to be aware of is that it is possible to get both Social Security Disability Insurance and Veteran’s Benefits.  The two are mutually exclusive – you are eligible for the former due to your status as a tax-paying citizen who has worked for a certain number of years, and eligible for the latter thanks to the amount of time you spent serving in the armed forces.  Many people are able to receive both sets of social security benefits, depending on the nature of their disability.  In addition to being able to collect on multiple sets of benefits, you might also be eligible for expedited processing of your Social Security Disability Insurance application.  As you might know, it takes about two years to be able to get through the Social Security Disability Insurance application process, so being eligible for expediting can really help you get on the fast track for those needed benefits.

Don’t give up on Social Security Disability Insurance just because you also receive veteran benefits.  Be sure to talk with the Social Security Administration to learn more about your eligibility for Social Security Disability Insurance and other benefits.
