Reduce Your Benefits Waiting Period
Posted in: Application Process on August 4th, 2011

time-is-moneyOne of the biggest problems with both Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income is the fact that the wait time for receiving benefits is very long.  Not only is the application process itself long and tedious, even after you get accepted to the program, you won’t get your benefits right away.  There is a mandatory six month waiting period between getting accepted for benefits and then ultimately receiving the first payout – so this means you’ll have to sit around for half a year with no benefits, even if you were able to get accepted to either one of these programs on the day that you applied!

This amount of time can cause serious problems for individuals or families who have disabled persons and are waiting desperately for help.  It’ll be a long wait no matter what you do, but what can you do to make the process go faster?

Tips For Speed

First, make sure that all of your paperwork is filled out correctly.  Lots of delays can come if it turns out that the government doesn’t have all of the information they need to make a judgment on your particular case.  Be sure that you read everything thoroughly and double-check your forms.  If you need help, call the Social Security Administration or check out the website at for more information.

In the event that you have extra money and would like to streamline the process, for some individuals it helps to hire a representative to guide them through the red tape.  The obvious negative to this approach is that you’ll have to spend the money to make it happen, but people who hire representatives do tend to get through the system faster.
