Applicants to either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income will be required to furnish comprehensive documentation proving that they do indeed have an impairment that is severe enough to prevent them from functioning in the current economy. Generally, this is done through providing medical documents through a physician that are then reviewed by the Social Security Administration. This is why it is so important to receive continual medical treatment through the application process – the better your paper trail, the better your chance of getting those disability benefits. But what happens if your medical documentation is considered incomplete?
In the event that your application for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income is in jeopardy due to a lack of medical evidence to support your claims, you may be asked to visit a third party physician for a physical in order to prove your claims.
Generally, the third party physician is one that is chosen by the courts, but in the event that you have some sort of medical coverage that the court-selected physician does not take, you may be able to request a different third party physician. The easiest thing to do, though, is continue receiving medical treatment all throughout the application process. This eliminates the need for a third party physician and will help your claim go through the courts that much faster!
In the event that you do not have medical coverage during the disability application process, check out free clinics in your area, or even the local VA hospital if you have access. If you do not, even visiting the emergency room is better than having no documentation at all.
