How Do I Survive While Applying?
Posted in: Application Process on August 26th, 2011

waiting on benefitsMany people apply for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income with this worry in mind.  After all, it’s no secret that the average amount of time that an applicant has to spend on his or her application for either of this programs is steadily growing – right now the average wait is at about 2 years.  This is a long time to wait between applying for benefits and actually receiving a check.  What should you do if you are applying for either Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income yet are worried about this interterm period?

Is There A Good Answer?

Unfortunately, as of right now there is not.  The best advice to take is to prevent yourself from taking on additional debts and obligations and possibly restrict the ones that you already have as much as possible.  Avoid making major purchases, and start cutting back on monthly expenses.  Any traditional budget-minded thinking should be employed during this time.

If you really need outside help and it is impossible to sustain yourself financially during this time, Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income claimants can try applying for food stamps and other such assistance programs.  Sometimes you may be able to get on welfare during this time, depending on your own personal circumstances.

It is important to apply as soon as possible for disability benefits.  The sooner you apply, the sooner you will get them!  The longer you delay, the longer it will take for your paperwork to go through.  As soon as you realize that you have a disability, be sure to start planning for the application process and get your application in as soon as possible.
