Eligibility for Social Security Disability Insurance
Posted in: Application Process on September 20th, 2011

disability benefitsIf you are thinking about applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, it is important to understand what the eligibility or requirements are in this program. The application process for Social Security’s Disability Insurance can take up to two years at this point, so being aware of the parameters of the program is very important for ensuring that you do not waste your time on an application where you might not be eligible.

What Are The Requirements?

If you would like to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance, be sure that you meet the following characteristics:  first, you must have a disability that is expected to last longer than one year or result in death.  This is a requirement that the Social Security Administration holds for everyone. This is to ensure that only the people who truly need Social Security Disability Insurance end up receiving disability benefits. If your disability is expected to last a lesser amount of time, and was caused by working, you might be eligible for Workmen’s Comp instead.

In order to prove to the Social Security Administration that your disability will last longer than one year or end in death, it is important to keep up on your medical records and tests. If you do not have medical records to show that your illness or injury will last more than one year or result in death, you may not be able to get disability insurance even if this is true.  So, gather your paperwork, and good luck with your Social Security Disability Insurance application.
